Visions of Dreamland was our first collaborative exhibition, showing at HOGAN Gallery in Melbourne during May 2015. We created a body of work that displayed elements of our inner world in the outer world. The surreal and emotive paintings expressed dreams and desires from each of us.
The exhibition was also featured as part of the Melbourne International Design Week.
Chuck's work is often inspired by deep contemplations on his life and humanity, and his art for this series is about a mixture of awaken and sleeping dreams. He expresses his strong desire to follow his artistic dreams, as well as giving us glimpses of his strange dream life.
Júlia's paintings for this series are depictions of visions she has while asleep. Her dreams are usually either colourful and sunny places full of life or dark, bizarre fantasy worlds where she watches dramatic plays unfold between strange characters. The set of paintings is an expression of this duality and features common themes from her dream life: water, whales, death and drama.
Chuck was invited for an interview with Alex McCulloch for the Arts Show on the 12th of May. They had a really interesting chat about our Visions of Dreamland exhibition, recurring themes in our artwork, the work we do for a living and working together as a couple. Watch the video to listen to the full interview.
We also documented the weeks leading up to the exhibition in a series of short videos. We talked about making a living from art, balancing commercial and personal jobs, what inspires us and our challenges.
